One Night Stay in Johannesburg

Hello - My husband and I are overnighting in Johannesburg for one night before flying home to the States the following day at 6:00 pm. We arrive into the city around 1:00 pm the day prior.

Can you please recommend an area for us to stay that will be convenient to the airport but will still offer restaurants and sightseeing opportunities for our short stay in the city?

One option is The D'oreale Grande at Emperors Palace which is a superb hotel. The Emperors palace is an enterntainment complex close to the airport. There are 4 hotels to choose from and all hotels have shuttle services to the airport. http://www.emperorspalace.co.za.

The second option is to stay in Sandton where you also have a number of shops and restaurants within walking distance. Sandton can be conveniently reached with the Gautrain which has super connections between the airport, sandton and pretoria http://www.gautrain.co.za/.

Thanks, Michelle. Sounds like Sandton is more our style. Can you also recommend site-seeing that is convenient to that area? Keep in mind that we won't get into town until around 2:00 pm on day 1 and have a 6:00 pm flight out on day 2.

Sandton is really a commercial "Hub", and although there are malls, hotels, and shops and restaurants, there is not much "sight seeing" to be done.

The interesting places, like Soweto, Apartheid Museum, Newtown, Origins Centre, Constitutional hill, Gold Reef City, Cradle of Humankind, Lion pPark, Wonder Cave, etc etc are all some distance away from central Sandton.

Johannesburg ( and Sandton is part of Johannesburg) is a sprawling city, with a larger "footprint" than New York, or London. Wherever you stay, you will be some distance away from the majority of sights.

There is no one place to stay, which is close to all the interesting places.

What Gavin says is correct. No matter where you stay you cannot reach the attractions "on foot".

I think a Soweto tour or a half day city sightseeing tour will be your best bet to get an impression of the city.

Here is a tour operator to give you some ideas of which tours you can choose from and how long they take. hyltonross.co.za/johannesburg-group-tours.as…

According to your flight schedule, you will only be able to decide for one halft day tour.

Maybe a private city tour in the afternoon when you arrive in Sandton could be an option, or you spend the afternoon walking around town and doing some shopping.

We are also staying overnight in Johannesburg, arriving at 1PM and leaving at 5PM the following day.

We'd like to do the Apartheid museum on the first day, and do a Soweto bike tour the following day.

Any advice on where we should stay? Is it best to just stay at the airport overnight? Ideally, we'd like a place that has a nice restaurant for dinner, and is safe to walk around at night...

The Apartheid museum takes a while to go through but it is doable in the afternoon. It is closed on Mondays. You could stay in Rosebank. It is not so far from Soweto and the Apartheid museum. Nice suburb to stay, lot of hotels and restaurants.

You could try Melrose Arch. Its got a number of hotels. shops and a good selection of restaurants for Al fresco dining, and it close to the highway.

Sandton is the best idea, then you have the option of a half day tour to The Cradle of Humankind in the afternoon. Next day you have a full day, so i suggest do Soweto in the morning, have lunch at wandies, where you can have a delicious buffet of Traditional AFrican cuisine, then on to the apartheid Museum, with a drop off back at the airport. Just take your luggage along, it is quite safe. You will enjoy Sandton, it is very safe, and is a very upmarket, with an array of restaurants to choose from in the Nelson Mandela Square and nearby.
