Hotel vs. Vacation Rental

I was wondering if someone with good knowledge of Moorea can give some pros and cons of staying at a Vacation Rental in Moorea vs. one of the hotels. The prices seem to be relatively great on the vacation rentals and they look pretty good as well. We don't need to be pampered like at a hotel or have maid service, so what is it that we would be missing out on if we get a vacation rental?

In some ways a home rental would be better in my opinion.

In my opinion....the downside would be....location....you won't be able to experience staying in an overwater bungalow....you won't necessarily be on a nice stretch of beach....or have a great view. You will have to do your own cleaning and cooking and grocery shopping....and you'll probably have to have a rental car for the duration of your stay (not cheap).

I agree with Patti. On the other hand, you will most likely have better kitchen facilities in a home rental, and can save a bundle by preparing your own food (especially with a group of 8 people)!

If you don't mind making your own bed, sweeping your own floor, and cleaning up after yourself, and make sure to bring your own toiletries (and perhaps towels), a home rental is often preferable!

Well, no not necessarily always worse. But for the most part the hotels are usually built on the nicer stretches of beach...or have at least enhanced the natural beaches. Some of the private homes, especially some of those in the general golf course area on not on swimmable beaches or in areas with easy access to good snorkeling.

A car will be necessary if you plan to go out to stores to buy supplies for your meals. Obviously if you plan to just stay put at your house the whole time and never go out and about to explore the island, then just a short rental will cover it for you to do your grocery shopping.

We stayed here, cost was great, on the water, awesome view, just no beach.

We were in town(Maharepa) , near the market, restaurants, etc. All walking distance.
