access to Corcovado National Park

My family wants to explore Corcovado National Park. We have about a week. We are also interested in beach time. What is the best place to stay: Bahia Drake or Puerto Jimenez? We are 2 seniors, 2 adults, and 2 children, ages 8 and 11. We are also looking for safe, affordable, and clean accomodations.

For accommodations, wider selection on the Puerto Jimenez side of Osa. But that would put a damper on visiting La Sirena ranger station. There are other options to feel the Corcovado, like Dos Brazos trail.

If La Sirena is a must, you should go to Drake Bay as from there, you can use boat transfer to Corcovado NP, either La Sirena or San Pedrillo areas.

None of those two places is good for swimming or general beach time. For that best option on the way to or from Corcovado is Manuel Antonio.

If you want to enter Corcovado Park you should probably go to Drake Bay because as already mentioned above you can get to the Sirena ranger station in Corcovado Park from Drake Bay by boat. There is lots of wildlife on the trails around the Sirena ranger station. You can also book other tours in Drake Bay like snorkeling tours, mangrove tours, a night tour... There is a beach hiking trail that goes to several nice beaches and a jungle river where you can take a guided canoe trip to waterfalls. Some of the beaches along the hiking trail are nice for swimming. Drake Bay has great lodges. Some are only accessible by boat. There is also cheaper accommodation in the village.

If you choose the Puerto Jimenez area where to stay depends on your budget. Cabo Matapalo has lots of wildlife and great lodges but is not cheap. I have no idea what your budget is (affordable means different things to different people) but maybe check out Casa Bambu. Another option is Carate. For cheaper lodging look at Puerto Jimenez or Dos Brazos de Rio Tigre and make day trips to Cabo Matapalo and Carate. To actually enter Corcovado Park you can go on a guided day hike from Carate or Dos Brazos. Unfortunately you can't reach the Sirena ranger station in the park on a day hike (you would have to do a three day trek and stay overnight at Sirena). But you can also hike great rainforest trails and see lots of wildlife without actually entering the park.
