We just did this same drive a couple of weeks ago during our vacation in Costa Rica. Coming out of Monteverde you should have some great views down to the ocean.

Five hours is about right, taking it easy. Stop at the bridge over the Tarcoles to see the crocodiles. There's a great restaurant called Nimar somewhere along the way (IIRC, around Herradura), on the southbound side of the road.

Drive carefully and keep to the speed limit.

Have fun!

If you're making this drive, is there a good place to stop to get some food? Are gas stations the best source for finding bathrooms?

Many place along the way to buy food ...if is like a grocery store the best stop can be at the entrance of Herradura beach...Marriot Los Suenos is a big Auto Mercado there...as good and even better than many USA or Canadians markets!

Most gas stations restrooms are not the best...as almost anywhere in USA...I always stop in a restaurant that looks clean and buy a bottle of water...in that way I do not hurt any body!

If you are not eating at a restaurant, some will charge something like 100 or 200 colones to use the bathroom. Sometimes I just go in, use the bathroom and then hand someone 200 colones so as not to be rude about it.

Good advice from roadadvisor - use the bathroom and then buy something like a bottle of water. He is right about gas stations. Sometimes you will find the bigger ones OK but not always.

Almost all areas where you will be going will have either restaurants or small stores that sell snacks and drinks. In fact, many restaurants sell snacks and drinks so no worries there.
