Driving at night - Recife area

Hi everyone! We are a group of 4 and would like to rent a car and drive Recife airport - Olinda - Porto de Galinhas - Recife airport (one week car rental).

We are accustomed to drive abroad (in Latin America only in Mexico, though) and I do speak

Portuguese.

From/to airport to Olinda/PDG be late at night (late flights, unfortunately).

Is it really risky or can we do it? I just fear being carjacked, not roads themselves... what do you say?

some other tips for the Recife/Olinda/PdG area...

sunrise and sunset are very early in the region.... roughly 5am and 5:00-5:30pm (and it does not change much thruout the yr)... so plan accordingly to have the most time for daylight activities:

for evening, Olinda has some interesting (albeit expensive for Brazilian standards) restaurants... take a look at reviews:

Oficina do Sabor:

Beijupira:

Beijupira also has another location in PdG (which seems to get better reviews for some reason; maybe they cant provide consistent service in different locations):

[note: in PdG I went to Beijupira for dinner wearing bermuda shorts on hot evening... as we sat in outdoor garden, I went back to hotel with a gazillion mosquito bites on my legs.. they must have loved tourist blood...]

Thanks for the suggestion Monte. Last time I was in Brazil we locked the taxi trunk (suitcases), this time also the doors, you’re right...

You will notice the examples are from Rio and not the rest of Brazil. Rio is a very different place when it comes to safety.

Levels of crime in cities in the northeast are actually higher than in Rio.

According to this list (https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/most-dan…) Rio is not among the 50 cities around the world with highest homicide rates; while many NE Brazil cities (including Recife) are.

Hi everybody! I'm just back from my travel and (for the benefit -maybe- of other people reading) here's my experience. I followed the forum suggestions and didn't rent the car.

Got to the Recife airport at night, and called a Uber to get me directly to my Olinda pousada (which I previously booked in the historic center). I arrived there around midnight. Everything worked out fine.

As regards Rio (as some were mentioning it) well yes, I noticed that -with respect to my previous trip- the impression I got is that safety levels worsened. Especially at one specific time I felt happy that more military police were around to protect people and 'control' the areas where tourists are around.
