We hired a longtail, but we hated Maya Bay. You couldn't move on the beach and the sea wasn't a lot better. You might want to think seriously about giving it a miss, unless you go very early in the morning to beat the hoards.

You could hire a longtail and driver and go up to Bamboo Island (much nicer), spend some time there and then come back via Monkey Beach and Maya Bay.

Just an idea.

Agree wholeheartedly with Mags about Maya Bay. Every day-trip speed boat from Phuket goes there. You can't approach the sand because of the lined-up speed boats, and swimming is hazardous because of the ones stopped further out. The day-trips often cater for groups who can't swim, so there are areas cordoned off in the shallows, full of bobbing life-vests. The tourism photos must be taken at dawn - they never show these crowds.

Long-tail boat drivers from Tonsai will take you on a standard half-day snorkelling trip that includes Maya, Pi Ley and Loh Sa Ma, but you can ask them not to stop at Maya.

By the way, SS231, if you're staying at the Bayview, there's a water-taxi stand out the front. The guys are lovely - just let them know you want to go for a trip around the best snorkelling spots and they'll take you. Their prices are about the same as the ones in Tonsai and you don't need to book.

I got a longboat from just outside the Bayview in January, 1500baht for a 2 hour trip over to Maya Bay for a quick look (didn't stay there) & around the island & back to Phi Phi.

I went at 7:30am, so there weren't too many tourists there

Spopey

Thanks for the update about Maya. We were there last January and the invasion had started. Looks like its got worse.

We are wanting to go on a longtail trip from Tonsai just for the ride and the scenery. Two of our party won't snorkle so we were just going to go up to Bamboo Island and go ashore there for a while. Do you have any ideas of what else we could include.

Thanks for any comments. (Yes, we can swim so we shouldn't be bobbing around in the way !)

Hi Trevor (Tragic),

Bamboo Island sounds good, but I haven't been there so can't comment. Closer to home, you could go to Loh Lana (Lana Bay), a beach on the north of Phi Phi Don. It's been pretty deserted the times we have been there and has good snorkelling and a walking track that takes you to a small village where you can get a drink, then a bit further on there's the Village Hotel. You can wander along the beach and swim or do the walk, and the boat guy will wait for you. The bay was hit very badly by the tsunami of 2004 and you can still see broken-topped palm trees, and maybe that's why it's deserted. Also around Phi Phi Don, there's a place where you can sometimes see turtles - the guys at the Bayview know where to take you.

Sally

Thanks for your good ideas. More in our line than joining the crowd at Maya.

We will probably rely a lot on the longtail drivers. They would have the local knowledge but at least we will arrive with some idea of what we want to do.

Thanks again for your interest in replying.

Trevor
