Consider also Porec and Opatija - google those places, and I think you will easily figure out why. Opatija definitely offers a touch of class - and Porec has, beside Pula, the most to display when history and architecture are in question

what we typically like are a good selection of restaurants within walking distance of our accommodation. Ideally in a bustling town area, and walks along the coastal areas. Also we do not want to pay inflated prices similar to

Dubrovnik.

thank you in advance Tom

The majority of the best places to eat at in Istria are in rural areas and villages. Renting a car in Istria is ideal if you can.

I agree with the Poreč and Opatija recommendations...both are bustling with a busy vibe. Rovinj is definitely the most charming nd quaintest. Pula is a fabulous town to visit, too. Keep in mind August is incredibly busy on the coast. Poreč is very touristy in summer but not packed like Dubrovnik. It's already starting to get busy.

Rovinj would be my preference over Opatija which felt like some of the Italian resorts where you are expected to pay for everything. what type of accommodation - hotel, apartment etc are you seeking?

Hi, we normally hire an apartment within walking distance of the main areas,

We are actively looking now, just not sure which area to settle on at present. Hence the forum.,

You've got such great choices. My top recommendation for Istria is nearly always Rovinj but it has fewer sites than a few other options (the town itself is made to wander). But the good thing is you can easily see them as daytrips. Do you prefer larger cities or small towns? Are you looking for lots of activities?

we are open to activities but mainly walks with places to stop and snack etc. we normally do a bit of island hopping and may visit Italy if viable from there? Nightlife for us is eating at a nice selection of restaurants and watching the world go by.and maybe catch a nightcap on the way back.

Thanks Tom

Opatija is sort of Croatian Monte Carlo - great Art Deco hotels and casinos, along 12 km long promenade - Lungo Mare

Rovinj is a great place and does have a lively central old town with many bars and restaurants, plus a great coastal path to enjoy either on foot or on bike. Howeve, Rovinj is also rather isolated. If you wish to see more, to see something different, you basically must rent a car and drive elsewhere. There are buses as well but those are not city buses but just for going from one town to another.

Opatija is also very lively but mostly just during the day. After 22 and especially 23 h you're unlikely to hear any noise or see that many people outside. Not deserted but just... quiet. Not really for those looking for a typical nighlife. It also is often referred to as Monte Carlo of the East. Not to go into reasons but it has recognizable Austrian architecture (was mostly developed by Austrians). No old town as such but brilliant parks. Also, that ~12 km long coastal path (doesn't get more coastal than that but no biking). And there's a multitude of bars and restaurants (and hotels and private accommodation), some even along that path (Lungomare). And there's the Open-air theatre (Summer Stage, Ljetna pozornica) inside on of the parks, right by the sea, with stone walls, with concerts and movies. But, the best thing about Opatija is that it's just one town in the larger developed region comprised of the small fishing village of Volosko (where the Lungomare path starts), Opatija itself, then Ičići (the most popular beach in the area), Ika and Lovran (vera nice as well). So, it's ~12 km of the coast with several towns basically connected and with more or less populated areas. And the entire area is towered by Mt. Učka (the highest in the Istria region) and covered by forest. Like living in a park/forest but also in a city. Incredible. And Mt. Učka is a Nature Park, offering meny hiking and biking paths. And on top of that, the area is connected by city bus(es) which may not be running at a very short interval but are still common enough. And they run on the main road which is very close to the coast and Lungomare. So, you may start walking and if you get tired you can always walk for ~50 metres to reach the main road and wait for the bus (you can find the timetable online). And there are many more options, including a visit to Rijeka, the third-largest city in Croatia (that same bus) with a brilliant fish market, great central area and say, ruines of two castles (Trsat and Grobnik). Etc.

Another major difference between Rovinj and Opatija is that Opatija enjoys very early sunrises (say, around 6) when it's bathed in light but then Mt. Učka causes the direct sun to disappears around 18-18:30. Rovinj gets longer days and great sunsets.

So, Rovinj is brilliant, bike-friendly, almost flat, great fun and usually something going on, but isolated and with not many activities. Opatija is also brilliant, no real nightlife but impressive nature and hiking (biking is possible but a lot more challenging), with a lot to see and enjoy in and around.

Rovinj in real-time, both coastal area and the old town: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULrHgk7w4RQ Volosko and Opatija: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JQ8EIZqBok Lungomare (Opatija to Lovran): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziwbrZDkaEU Mt.Učka hike: https://www.youtube.com/watch… Mt. Učka biking: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEbChdyT8io

I can go into more details if you like.

As for Pula, it's mostly known and popular for its Roman buildings but they are all neatly set along the pedestrian zone, around a hill in the centre and can be seen and explored on a day visit from either Rovinj or Opatija. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7P3yMFgQ5g
