Transportation

We are flying into Rio (GIG) and would like to visit Petropolis for two nights. What is the best way to get there? Taxi, hire a car or bus. If we take a bus do we need to purchase tickets beforehand. It is my husband and myself. We are experience

travelers for we have lived all over the world Thanks Tintz

Taxi = very expensive

Car = good option but you face Rio drivers which are known to be a bit wild

Bus = cheapest option; no need to book in advance, many options during the day.

Depending on what you want to do and what you want to see in Petropolis, i'd consider renting a car. Public Transportation in Petropolis isn't very good and mosth things to see ar not close to the center whilst the best pousadas are far from the city center. Don't forget to include a GPS in the rent.

I would rather prefer to go by bus, very good with connection to Petropolis almost every half and hour and you can have the option to take the bus either at the main Terminal Buses Station in Rio ( RODOVIÁRIA) or in another smaller terminal, right at the downtown area of Rio called Terminal Buses Menezes Cortês, about 3 blocks from Rio Branco Avenue, right in the middle of the downtown area.

In Petropolis you can either hire a taxi or even a horse carriage, if you want to be more exotic, for the main attractions the city can offer.

Thanks for all your responses. The hotel sent a taxi driver down to collect us. After the long overnight flight we were happy to be escorted away. A little expensive but worth the convince of not having to haul uggage around. We are going on a long cruise after this and then onto Patagonia so there is a fair amount of luggage. Tintz.

Unica buses run every half hour daily until 11:30 p.m. from the Rodoviário Novo Rio Terminal to Petrópolis’ main bus station and costs R$18 (one-way ticket).

The Rodoviária Novo Rio long distance interstate bus terminal is located five minutes away from the downtown district (Centro).

Petrópolis is located about 40 miles from Rio de Janeiro.

Petrópolis used to be the summer residence of the Brazilian emperors and aristocrats in the 19th century and was the official capital of the State of Rio de Janeiro between 1894 and 1903. The town was named after Emperor Pedro I, the nation's first monarch.

Thanks for the information about the buses to Petropolis. We are staying there three days and want to go to Paraiba do Sul to visit friends. Are there car rental companies in Petropolis?
