Three weeks in February

We are staying three weeks in Salvador: week one in Pelhourino, week two in Morro de Sao Paola (during Carnaval. It was too expensive to remain in Salvador), and week three at Itapua Beach.

We have our accommodation, but would greatly appreciate any suggestions as to activities, tours, restaurants etc. We are active seniors and experienced travellers, but do not speak Portuguese, (though have been taking daily Duolingo lessons).

We are looking for the music, the food, the culture, the birds...

Rio Vermelho, Brazil:

Salvador’s trendiest neighborhood has cobblestone streets, plentiful beaches and plenty of stylish hotels, music venues, art spaces, and restaurants.

Salvador, one of the birthplaces of Brazilian culture:

How to spend five days traveling in Salvador.

Once the capital of the country, Salvador is composed of a mix of European, African and native heritage, that is reflected in the local music, dance and architecture.

You could easily spend a whole day in Pelourinho, Salvador’s colorful historic center. Lots to see and do and there are a number of fine restaurants.

If you like folk dance, you may want to get tickets for Pelourinho’s Balé Folclórico da Bahia:

If you’re looking for a nice place to go for lunch or dinner and if you’re in the mood for a great caipirinha, the Cuco Bistrô should be your first choice in Pelourinho.

Near the beautiful church of São Francisco, Cuco has a charming, cozy atmosphere, an attentive, English-speaking staff, and a varied menu featuring Bahian-style fish and meat dishes. I had the seafood mocequa, which was delicious, and the coffee was the best I tasted in Brazil.

Thank you for your responses. We are in the Santo Antonio area now, right by the Pilar, and heading down to the market this morning. So far, we are loving it here. We had a great meal last night, and some wonderful live music in the main Pelhourino Square. We are booking a gastronomic tour for later in the week (regional cooking is a main interest), We walked to the square in daylight, but took a taxi back after dark. There are tourist police everywhere at the main streets and cross streets, maybe more than usual as Carnaval is coming up? There is a 5000 passenger cruise ship in today, so we expect venues to be crowded.

We have our catamaran booking to Mouro for next week, about a two hour trip I understand. Sometimes rough, but we are generally good sailors.
