Salvador, Recife or Fortaleza?

I will be working in Sao Paulo and have 7-10 days at the end of my work to explore. I need to fly to New Orleans afterwards and flight connections go through Florida from the North East of Brazil.

Would you recommend Salvador, Recife or Fortaleza as airport bases for 7-10 days travel? I would be happy to arrive at one and leave from the other (ie arriving Sao Luiz, leaving Fortaleza or arriving Salvador and leaving Recife).

I am not really interested in cities at all. I would like to have some beach time but also I would like to have some kind of activities as well like hiking etc. Don't mind travelling long distances really but obviously easier to keep it simple.

Any suggestions appreciated!

Salvador makes most sense imo since you mention hiking as one of your main interests. Chapada Diamantina National Park is a good trip for a few days.

which month of the year? while they are all 3 in NE Brazil, some have markedly different rainfall season than others (especially FOR.... )... in certain months, it only makes sense to go to beaches in state of Ceará (FOR is the state capital) because of that...

bear in mind that city center beaches in NONE of them are great, but you can certainly use any as your aiport base...

if you do want the hiking part, then as mentioned in #2, SSA is closer (but a 6 to 6:30-hour bus ride going inland...) to the Ch.Diamantina NP... Azul does fly to the small LEC airport there. though I dont think it is daily (2x/week maybe)...

something I always recommend to look at is historical average rainfall data... no fun being in a beach area when it is more likely to rain... link below shows month by month historical averages for Brazilian beaches (in yellow)... for púrely beach vacations, authors discourage going to any place where monthly avg is more than 200mm (in Portuguese, but very easy to follow... Janeiro is January and so on):

https:/…

for Trancoso (mentioned above), look for rainfall data for Porto Seguro, which is the airport (code is BPS) you would have to fly to... pretty far from Salvador itself... Itacaré is listed in link, but also far; you would fly to Ilheus (IOS) instead... for Boipeba, interpolate the rainfall data for Itacaré and Salvador/Morro de S. Paulo and you get a good idea on rainfall there.... but getting to Boipeba is even more time consuming...

this map shows the major beaches in state of Bahia (south of Salvador only) and the major airports there (SSA. IOS, BPS):

so that you have an idea of distances in state of Bahia, it is a 10-hour car ride between Salvador and Porto Seguro (or a one hour flight... or 11:30 hours on an intercity bus...)
