How far is Shah Alam from Downtown KL?

We are travelling by Malaysia Airlines to India and have a nights stopover in what we thought was KL, it turns out the hotel the airline is putting us up in is in Shah Alam. How far is this from Petaling Street and Petronas Towers etc in KL city centre. Is this a suburb in KL or a separate city?

Shah Alam is in the state of Selangor. KLIA is technically in the state of Negri Sembilan. KL is a Federal Territory within the state of Selangor (but a separate entity).

Not sure where your hotel is but it would be a fair distance from downtown KL (easily 30kms or more) ... cabs are the only option.

Thanks for that. We are staying at the Grand Blue Wave Hotel. Is there no trains from there to KL Sentral?

I just googled the Grand Blue Wave ... it's located in the heart of Shah Alam fairly close to the stadium. As far as I'm aware, there're no trains/LRT. Cabbing it to downtown KL should cost about RM40 to RM50 (plus additional 50% past midnight).
