Hi Eva

I have just returned from 3 weeks in Hammamet and it was still very busy when I left, although things were winding down a little bit.

It was busy with tourists from Algeria but during my last week they started to head back home. There are still a few European tourists out there but obviously not as many as there had been before. I'd say the centre of Hammamet by the Medina would still be busy - the restaurants were always packed and the streets and roads were busy when I was there last week. I was near the el mouradi sometimes and that area was also quite busy but again, it quietened down a little when the Algerian tourists started to leave. I don't think it'll be a ghost town, there are always lots of people around and I'm sure you'll have a lovely time :) you'll be made to feel very welcome!!

Eva

As Natter states there will be more North African visitors in the resorts than maybe is usual at this time of year.

Its good to see neighbouring countries(like Algeria and Libya) and their citizens supporting Tunisia at this time.

We socialised with a number of Algerians at our hotel in Sousse during our visit last December .

We also met many North Africans visitors at our hotel in Hammamet this June.

Hopefully, any increase in visitors from neighbouring Countries will help those hotels previously dependant on UK visitors and others from Europe.

Visits by Europeans has of course dropped dramatically.

The UK advice has resulted in our major holiday companies like Tui/Thomson and Thomas Cook cancelling all flights while the "non essential" travel advice is in place.

Here is a breakdown on recent figures and the collapse in tourist visits to Tunisia since both recent atrocities in Tunis and Kantaoui.

According to the Tunisian Central Bank(August 27th 2015) the number of foreigner tourists registered in July this year ,2015 dropped 44.1% from the same period in 2014 and 65.7% from the same period in 2010,

2010 being the year used as a reference point by tourist operators before the 2011 uprising.

Below are the statistics relating to foreign tourists/visitors

British nationals ranked first.

(down 93.1%),

Italians (down 79.6%),

Germans ( down 66.4%)

French nationals (down 39.45%).

And that is only the top 4 Countries on the list.

Tourists from Maghreb* countries increased by 26.3%.

(possibly more since the above figures were released as Natter in the 1st reply here indicates)

Slainte

Mick

*Maghreb Countries of course include Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Libya.
