Mt. Meru - is a guide required?

Hello,

We are a couple at our mid 30's, planning 4 days climb to Mt. Meru at the first week of June.

We are wondering whether booking a package that includes guide, cook and porter is "mandatory" for this climb or not? Is a guide necessary in order to reach the summit or the park ranger can function as our guide all the way to the top (for extra payment)?

We are reasonably fit, and on the third day we intend to see the sunrise from Rhino point and continue the climb to the summit by daylight.

If it is recommended to book the full package, what will be the expected cost?

If we don't book the package, is it possible to self-cater in the huts?

Thanks a lot!

A guide is not required. All that is required is a Ranger as an escort who of course will require feeding by you.

If you are prepared to lug up all the necessary cooking implements, utensils, fuel and food for your four day trip then you are free to do so.

You cannot prepare food in the huts if cooking is involved. Spare a thought for others.

Also remember that by hiring a porter and guide you are creating much needed employment.
