Tipping in Cambodia

We are travelling to Siem Reap in Nov 2011 and staying at the Pavillon D'Orient Hotel. We will have a dedicated tuk tuk driver and we are wondering what the correct protocol is regarding tipping the driver? I assume first that you do tip. Would you tip each time you go out or once at the end of your stay. How much? What about the rest of the hotel staff? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

If you have a "dedicated" tuk tuk driver and you are pleased with his services then tip him at the end of your time with him.

A decent tip will be very much appreciated by him and his family.

There is no need to tip at the end of each day.

Keep the tip to the end and as a measure of your appreciation of his services and assistance to you.

A few well chosen and kind words of appreciation are also much appreciated.

All best regards. Ian

tipping is not required, nor really expected but as Ian has said it will be appreciated.Depanding on the hotel the tuk tuk drivers will be on a set contract,so will be paid without any tip inmind.if you like to tip its really up to you but its not expected of you.

Thanks so much for your input Ian. What would be an appropriate amount of money? Since the service is included in the hotel rate it is hard to separate to base an amount on. Also, dining out in Cambodia is tipping also the standard amount we would be used to...in North America say 15 - 20%?

Hello Wenlet,

Your proposed 15% to 20% would be very decent and much appreciated.

But be sure to pay the tip directly to him and not through the hotel staff.

All best regards. Ian

the best tip you can give is just being happy.if you are happy at the end of your trip the tuk tuk driver will be also.if he has delivered excellent service a big smile and a thank you is more important than dollars, its not all about money its more about being nice.

Maybe as well as whatever amount you decide to tip, ask him for his contact details so you can refer your friends to him if ever they decide to travel to Cambodia. Word of mouth advertising is invaluable.

It depends what you are paying the tuk tuk driver in the first place, if it's a reasonable price then a small tip would be appreciated.
