Quiet waterfront locations from Zadar in September

Thinking about flying into Zadar around September 17th for 10 days or so and looking for a place to stay away from the tourist areas, with a quiet sandy beach, good local cuisine and a local feel.

Possibly on one of the islands.

Any ideas and recommendations please?

Nin for the mainland and Dugi Otok for an island.

We loved Dugi Otok and it was very quiet in June. I presume September would be too. It very much had the local feel you are looking for.

You have to be careful with Saharun beach. On the day we went it wasn't very nice, full of seaweed. The car park attendant said it depends which way the wind blows. Unfortunately, we were only on Dugi for 3 days and didn't have another chance to visit Saharun. Dugi Otok is definitely on our 'we have to go back there' list so hopefully next time we go we will have better conditions at Saharun. Instead we found a beautiful little bay to swim in...It was absolutely gorgeous!

If you want an island, Dugi Otok is a good suggestion. However, I would probably go for Kukljica on Ugljan island.

Neither island is crowded in peak season, let alone mid September.

I was actually going to suggest Kukljica in my first post. I had typed it in then deleted it before posting because the OP mentioned sandy beach.

There is a sandy beach called Sabusa not far from Kukljica but unless you have transport it might not be easy to get to. It is about a 20 minute walk and if my memory serves me right the drive there was down a very narrow road and I definitely wouldn't have wanted to walk there. They could have improved the road by now. It does have a sandy bottom but the beach is concrete and the sand isn't as white Sakarun.

Whereas, on Dugi Otok there is a tourist train that runs every two hours from Bozava to Sakarun. Hopefully, it still runs in September. If the OP has a car then Kukljica would be fine.

I do wish my dad didn't sell his family home in Kukljica.

I've been in Bozava in the second week of September and mini train was still operating. The 4 star hotel closes on 16 September and the other hotels on 24 September. You'd be going at the end of season, but Saharun Beach is beautiful.
