Injections for Chile & Argentina

Hi,

I'm going to Chile (taking in Santiago, Puerto Mont, Puerto Varas, Puerto Natales, 3 days in Torres Del Paine) and then onwards into Argentina (visiting Calafate, Buenos Aires, Iguazu [inc. Brazil side]) and a day trip into Colonia de Sacramento in Uraguay.

Do I need to get rabies injections for this trip. My local nures is unsure as to whether I should get it.

thanks,

Santiago, Chile

I do not believe you need to get a rabies vaccination. It is usually only recommended for people who are likely to come into prolonged contact with wild or domestic animals (biologist, veterinarian, or agricultural worker), or if you are visiting remote areas where medical attention may be delayed, or if you would be in an area for a period of at least a month where dog rabies is common. None of this is true for your visit or the places you will be visiting. If you were doing a month long cycling trip in remote parts of either country, then I would say it would be prudent to get the vaccine. Otherwise, no. Note that there is a recommendation for yellow fever vaccination if visiting Iguazú.

I ended up just needing a HepA & B booster. Got YF last year, so still covered for it. No rabies required.

Still checking out whether I need malaria tablets for Iguazu.
