What to do in Singapore for 18 hours? Stay in airport?

Hi,

Am getting 18 hours stop over at singapore. Shall i apply for transit visa and go down and see singapore or stay at airport and opt for free tour?

Which will be cost effective? I have been to singapore before. What and all places i can see in a day. Am not fond on foods and traveling alone and single ;)

Al i can spend arnd 60-70S$ in given day where 30S$ goes for visa i guess.

-Regards-

18 hours is a whole day of sightseeing. You will still need a visa to go on the free tour.

If money is tight, you can spend a whole day dsight seeing and not spend more than $40 on travel and food. This will cover one of the whole day sightseeing bus tours and a river cruise.

I had taken the free tour back in 1997 (when I was not a resident here). No visa was required even for people of those countries who normally need visas to enter Singapore. The passports had to be handed over to the tour organizer before leaving the airport and were handed back after reaching the airport. A tour organizer escorted all members (of the tour) through the immigration (both in and out). The passports were not chopped by the Singapore immigration.

I do not know if this has changed now, but you may check with the tour organizer upon arrival if you do actually need a visa now to take the free tour.

Even otherwise, the immigration usually do grant a 24 hour visa (free of charge) to transit passengers (including Indian passport holders) if you can produce the boarding pass for your onward journey. This provision is not written anywhere on ICA's official website but the officers do consider requests on case by case basis. A few of my friends have entered Singapore in this manner while in transit.

If most of your 18 hours are during daylight hours, you may explore Singapore on your own. Its not so expensive if you use buses and trains. It wont cost you a lot of money unless you visit some of the major tourist attractions. Depending on how far you are from the airport, make sure you start heading back to the airport at least two and half or three hours before your onward flight departure.

Just to confirm - yes, no need for a transit visa for the free tour. However, you'll spend 2 hours just inside a bus, and looking out to the window. You won't get to walk around, try the food, etc.

You can explore SG on a budget. Airport to city is just less than 2$, hopping on a bus is just 1$, and a meal in a hawker foodcourt is just 5-6$ or even less. There are free things to do like walk around, attend a free outdoor concert in Esplanade, go to temples, take a stroll along the river, people watch, and so on. If you haven't been to the city before, I think going out of the airport, even for just 18 hours or less, would be worth it.

Enjoy!

From the Changi website . >Registration is based on first-come-first-serve basis and are subject to entry visa requirements stipulated by the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority. <

Your free to leave the free tour in the City and make your own way back to the airport if you wish.

Thank you all for your replies. I reach singapore by morning 6:30am and my flight is by midnight 1AM. So, i have full day time to hang out.

Visa is free of charge as Rahul said in above post? I read somewhere it is S$30. Kindly clarify.

A normal visa entry costs S$ 30 (i.e. if you apply for a visa beforehand). My friends who came in with the 24 hour visa during transit were not charged anything. Again, there is no rule on granting this type of visa and its at the discretion of the Immigration officer at the airport.

In case you have made up your mind to enter Singapore, why don't you apply for an entry visa from wherever you are now? Your travel agent will be able to get you a visa online (no need to visit the Singapore embassy).

Rahul, you are right. I got transit Visa for 4 days at free of cost. All we need is more than 5 hours transit time and boarding pass for connecting flight and little luck, will get visa for entering into singapore on arrival.
