Taxi fare in Japan

Hi all,

Anyone can tell me please about taxis?

Are the drivers english speaking?

And how much approximately taxi fare costs for short distance, say.. 10 minute ride?

Thanks in advance!

Drivers don’t speak English. It’s best to have the phone number for your destination for the driver. He can enter it into the GPS to get you to your destination.

Very few speak English. Don't count on it. If not sure how to say/explain destination, print out or show on smart phone in Japanese. Most take credit cards, but sometimes the card machines don't work and they prefer cash. If paying for a ride less than 2000 yen, don't give large bills, as they don't like to carry and give lots of change. Carry some 1000 yen bills for taxi rides. About 10 minutes should be 1000 yen or less. Here's a calculator:

As mentioned, not many drivers speak English language. Have your destination name, address in Japanese, and telephone number. Hotel names aren't a great help when in large cities like Tokyo and Osaka there are literally hundreds of hotels with new ones springing up each month. Taxi rides might cost slightly above 1,000 yen for a ten minutes ride (I am slightly less optimistic than nishin-san above). Cash is preferred (some drivers told me that bad companies give no profit to the driver for credit card payment); 10,000 yen note is not welcomed as drivers would need to secure change frequently. Tip is not required.

taxi fare, like in Singapore, is mainly determined by distance. ~350 yen per KM , ~80 yen per 90 seconds of waiting or getting stuck in traffic

Don't the doors automatically open and close?

There were special "foreign friendly" taxis in Kyoto. They were clearly marked and had their own queue at the train station. Not sure if this is the case elsewhere. We generally just hailed one on the street, but we had our hotel write down their name and location so we could just show it to the driver. We also had hotel staff write down our destination, like a dinner restaurant, when we were heading out. I imagine Just pulling up a website with the Japanese info for your destination works as well.
