Tokyo Day Trip? Kamakura or Nikko?

Sadly, we only have time in our Tokyo itinerary for one day trip.

Which do you recommend: Kamakura or Nikko?

What is the rest of your itinerary like? If you're going to Kyoto and Nara, Kamakura will be quite redundant.

Nikko is mainly shrines/temples too but you can include Kegon Waterfall and Lake Chuzenji that are scenery and nature.

My favorite day trip from Tokyo is Kawaguchiko (Mt. Fuji). If it's not included in your itinerary already, consider it.

My vote is for Nikko. Even if you have been to Nara.

Aren't you just doing a layover? If so, doing a day trip to anywhere outside Tokyo is a mistake.

Thanks for the quick responses!

We only have 3.5 days in Tokyo. Our trip is actually to Thailand, but we have this short stopover, and I'm trying to maximize our time there. Maybe I'm trying to schedule too much?

LiarsSF - Our 12-hr layover is on the trip back home. I'm also trying to determine how to fill those hours.

I suggest you be flexible depending on weather. In your circumstances, Nikko, Kamakura, and Kawaguchiko are all possibilities, depending on what you are seeking.
