JR Pass or not ? 7 Day or 14 Day ? For this itinerary

Here is our itinerary so far. I have been reading a lot about the JR pass and how it is only good for long distance travel and that I should consider instead buying a SUICA card for Tokyo and maybe also doing a Kansai/Hiroshima Pass instead of the JR pass. My initial itinerary doesn't look to be worth it for a 14 day pass but I'm not sure if a 7 day pass is even workable or worth it for this itinerary.

We have flexibility for how many days in each location but a trip to Hiroshima/Miyajima is a must for my husband. I have two sons aged 16 and 18.

Current itinerary: get a 7-day JR Pass and use it from 28-4, that is assuming you are visiting HIroshima and Miyajima as a day trip only so you will overnight at Osaka on 4.

To save the most money though and make the move between Kyoto and Osaka more sensible, use this plan for the 7-day Pass window:

27: Mt. Fuji (Hakone or Fuji Five Lakes, partially covered by JR Pass)

28-1: Kyoto including Nara

2-3: Hiroshima/Miyajima overnight trip, head to Osaka by end of 3

Another option that gives you more flexibility for day trips while based in Osaka is to use the Kansai Hiroshima Pass. In that case, buy a one-way Shinkansen ticket from Tokyo to Kyoto. Starting on 3, activate the Kansai Hiroshima Pass and head to Hiroshima/Miyajima. If you have extra time left in the remaining days, you can add day trips to Okayama, Kurashiki, Onomichi or other places you like. On your last day, you can use the Pass to go back to Kansai Airport.

Thank you for your quick and thoughtful reply. As I understand it, you are recommending going to Hiroshima and Miyajima in between Kyoto and Osaka and staying overnight. Any recommendations on whether to stay in Hiroshima or Miyajima for the evening ? Also, after writing my initial email, I was reading about Hakone vs. Mt. Fujii and whether or not an overnight is worth it in Hakone ? I am open to reducing my time in either Tokyo or Osaka. Your further thoughts are appreciated

A very good itinerary. You might consider adding Okayama/Kurashiki and/or Himeji/Kobe out of Osaka, especially if you wind up getting the Kansai Hiroshima Pass.

Have fun.
