Hiroshima to Fukuyama or Miyajima?

We are a family traveling to Japan in June with 3 kids, ages 12, 14, and 15. We will take a train from Kyoto to Hiroshima to see the major sites there, but were thinking it would be nice to stay overnight in Miyajima. Unfortunately, accommodations there seem really tight on our dates. Would going to Fukuyama instead be as good? Is there much there to do? Is one or the other much easier to get to from Hiroshima? Or should we go Miyajima or Fukuyama from Kyoto first, spend the day and overnight there, then head to Hiroshima? Or perhaps someone has another recommendation of a scenic (beachy) alternative near Hiroshima? All input appreciated!

Fukuyama has not much to see. It's not a destination for a regular tourist. Miyajima, on the other hand is a must to many tourists with a good reason.

If finding a ryokan//hotel in Miyajima is not easy, just stay in Hiroshima for 2 nights and visit Miyajima from there. They're only 45 minutes apart via train and ferry.

Staying a night in Okayama between Kyoto and Hiroshima is another good option. Be sure to visit Kurashiki if you go for this option:

There are also places to stay in Miyajima-guchi if the island is your major focus. We're planning to stay on the island & the mainland was also considered because of finding it hard to find a place. 10 minutes away via ferry.

Good luck.

Can't recommend staying at Miyajimaguchi. It'll be so boring at night and there are only a few low budget hotels available.

Fukuyama itself doesn't have much to do/see. Tomonoura is an interesting fishing port with a few ryokans. But the bus ride there is not much fun.

Less boring than staying on the island!

Lol, no argument from me, but many people claim that staying in Miyajima is something special. To me, once was more than enough.

As others have said stay in Hiroshima and just make a very full day visit by going early and leaving say after sunset just to get a feel for the island after the bulk of visitors have left.
