travel warning: Demonstration all over medan

As the issue of the raising in petrol prices in Indonesia reach (almost) its boiling point yesterday night as the parliament vote in favour for a new amendments that practically give green light to the goverment to raise the petrol price. while exactly when and how much of a raise is still wait to be seen, demonstration against the raise has been taking a rised since this last few days.

yesterday demonstration by the student from the university of Nomensen end up being anarchist, KFC that is right opposite their campus fell victim, the place is totalled. Hotel Angkasa on the other side of the campus is getting their fair share of the mob mentality of this so called "university student". this is one of the more violent demonstration with plenty of other spots where street are being totally closed and tyre being burnt everywhere. the last 2 days street leading to polonia airport has been closed by demontrators forcing traveler to walk into the airport, that is if you end up walking inside safely in one piece, with thing like this you just never know when it will turn violence

while its no where near the extreme level of the 1998 riot, it does looks like things are escalating pretty quickly. more tyre being burn in the middle of a street and mob taking over and intersection being reported today.

out of town tourist destination like Lake Toba, Berastagi and Bukit Lawang is not effected in any way by the time of writing. but you still need to navigate your way out of Medan to get there.

Arte,

Thank you so much for the warning. I just posted a link to this post on LP Thorn Tree for travellers arriving or departing Medan in the next few days.

I have just checked transportation to and from Medan - Parapat (Lake Toba) today. Today everything is quiet again. It seems that what happened over the last few days was just practicing and rehearsing. The plan now is that petrol cost (BBM) will rise as per June 27. Anticipating this one may expect that the real Demo's will start around June 23/24 building up to June 27.

So my opinion is that for next 3 to 4 days travelers between Medan and Parapat don't have to worry too much. Just try to keep track of developments. If possible try to plan for a few hours more when traveling Medan - Parapat or Medan - Berastagi or Medan - Bukit Lawang or v.v. from June 24 - 27.

Though it can be or possibly will be very inconvenient for a few days please do realize this is in principle an Internal Issue and not targeted at tourists or travelers in any way. Just keep out of it and take a detour whenever coming close to a demo.

HORAS !!! HORAS !!! HORAS !!!. WELCOME TO LAKE TOBA.

Dear Artemio,

I stand corrected as far as the date was concerned. From here, Samosir, it seems that now it already happened there is no need for demo's anymore. The same most likely holds for Medan. As a result of the higher petrol cost the transportation cost is going up accordingly. Starting today the new rates of the Parapat transporters are for transportation only Parapat - Medan via Siantar:

Shared taxi seat: Rp 75.000,-- per seat (This was Rp 65.000,-- per seat )

Chartered Car : Around Rp 520.000,-- (This was Rp 450.000,-- )

I am currently in Medan and can confirm that a) petrol price is already up to 6500 IDR and b) there are no problems here. At least we did not see any demonstrations when passing the city today.

True. All quiet on the western front. Except for the complaints of the taxi drivers.
