Bali Itinerary

We are planning a 2 week trip to Bali during Christmas and New Years.

We want to chill at the beach, surf, do a few dives, visit Tanah Lot and Uluwatu temple, explore some waterfalls in Ubud, climb Mt Batur and check out the Komodo Dragons on Rinca island.

We plan on reaching on 22nd Dec. We would love some advice on our tentative itinerary:

1 - 4: Seminyak (With day trip to Nusa Penida - we want to see 3 sights there)

5 - 7: Fly to Lubuan Bajo (day trip to Rhine island)

8 - 10: Seminyak (to celebrate New Years) and a day trip to Gilli Trawangan (really want to try the mushroom shake there and relax on the beach)

11 - 15: Ubud (Fly back on 6th Jan)

We actually want to spend more time in Ubud (than Seminyak) but it seems there wont be much to do there on New Years Eve and this is the first time in 10 years that we really want to party on New Years Eve. If there are other places that we could stay in instead of Seminyak, we are open to that. We thought it might be nice to split the stay because the southern part has access to surf schools, dive tours and the temple sights we want to see.

We are very open to suggestions. I really want to do Ubud and see the komodo dragons, but are flexible on the other aspects of the itinerary.

Day trip to gili t is not possible

If it is possible fly to LBJ on the day thay you arrive, bad traffic outside bali’s airport due to construction

As above day trip to Gilis not really possible unless you want to fork out IDR900k maybe and spend 8hours of the day travelling for 2.5hrs on the Island.

Even then that normally only works in the high season. December is low season for boats.

Where do you intend diving. What level/experience.

If Rinca is that important and you intend to dive there I suggest you do some serious research on diving in December.

Poor seastate generally around Bali/Lombok/Flores so take this into account.

And why do Seminyak and Seminyak again. Come up with better use of time.

Personally I would start in Ubud then LBJ or as suggested try to go to LBJ asap.

Seminyak for New year basically messes up a better overall use of your time as putting it at the end would have been better.

Day trips to Penida can be done from Seminyak or Ubud. Look at www.marutigroupfastboat.com as an example of day tours including free pickup. Expensive at IDR1m.

Possible to haggle prices down at a local tourist booth.

Ideally if you could you could consider a few days inLembongan. You can surf in lembongan, dive local sites and if seastate permits dive Penida and get organised day tours to Penida.

e.g. www.newbrosurfing.com

Again can't emphasise enough how poor the seastate is around Bali in December. Penida can be very dangerous any time of the year but Dec/Jan/Feb worst time.

Sea can get very choppy and the current extreme. Reef hooks a good idea. Dive centres on Lembongan rightly do assessments on a daily basis but some unscrupulous locals still take people to Manta Bay snorkeling in conditions they shouldn't.

3. Re: Bali Itinerary

That is extremely helpful. Does that imply that we should stick to Bali and not dive or surf at all in December or even travel to Gilli T or Nusa Penida given that it is wet season? Also, I am guessing seeing komodo dragons during that time will be difficult because if the seas are rough, we might not be able to go to the islands. In that case, should i cancel Bali in December altogether and maybe travel travel there another time?

Diving in December can be good on the north east coast. Tulamben is one of the driest areas of Bali and often (but no guarantees) the wet season won't have started in December. Seas are generally calmer this time of year.
