"Hop-on Hop-off "open top sightseeing bus

There have been some previous posts asking whether sighseeing bus tours are available. The Big Bus Company which also operates in London and Dubai has just started a "hop-on, hop-off" open-top sightseeing bus service in Hong Kong with recorded commentary in eight languages.

There are two routes, "red route" starting at Star Ferry Pier in Central touring Central, Wan Chai, Causeway Bay and Admiralty with stops at HKCEC, Lower Peak Tram Terminus and Lan Kwai Fong. The "blue route" starts at Tsim Sha Tsui East Promenade near Starbucks on the Avenue of Stars/New World Centre and tours TST East, TST, Nathan Road, Monkok and returns via Canton Road with stops at Langham Place, Temple Street and Mody Road.

A single ticket covers both routes. The routes are connected via the Star Ferry and the ticket price includes both a return Star Ferry ticket and a return Peak Tram ticket.

Tickets are HK$320 adult for the Big Bus Day Tour which operates every 30mins between 10am and 6pm and the ticket lasts for 24 hours. There's also a "panoramic night tour" which costs HK$200 or a "combo ticket" for both day and night tour costs HK£$420. There are concessions for children 5-15 and a family ticket is also available.

Tickets can be bought online, via hotels or by phone and although it doesn't say this in the publicity leaflet I was told by Big Bus staff that you can purchase on the bus.

The website;

www.bigbustours.com

refers to a special introductory price of HK$200 for the blue route only as this route was "soft-launched" on 15th Dec but both routes now appear to be operating so I assume full prices may now apply.

Seems a little expensive considering there are not that many 'sights' to see in Hong Kong.

I don't quite understand why people would pay HK$320 for this service when, for much less, they could use an Octopus card to hop on and off the endless stream of ordinary double-deck buses.

And I am far from sure that an open top is particularly attractive in Hong Kong's climate!

That is really expensive, and for the price you can get on regular buses dozens of times. But for those who are not good at figuring out bus routes (and there are lots of routes on Nathan Road), this may be an attractive option.
