How difficult is it to find and buy digital camera memory cards while traveling in China?
You will eventually be tired of people harassing you to buy one.
One of my first shopping experiences in China was purchasing a memory card which turned out to have no memory. Oh, sure, the computer said the memory was there, but when you used it, whoops, nothing. Same thing is common with batteries in China. Lots of fakes or cheap ones.
When you walk out of a store after "testing" something and try to take it back the next day, the likelihood of a refund is dim. Too many people substitute defective merchandise for what they bought, merchants say.
You might want to take a photo right in the store or in front of the tourist kiosk, but that still does not guarantee that 8 GB is really there.
I suggest buying them in a store less likely to traffic in phony goods, such as Walmart, Carrefours, Lotus and other major stores. Those tourist kiosks may be there today and who knows where tomorrow.
