best short trips from Beijing.

We'll be in Beijing with 4 kids in July for 2 weeks.

Thought it would be nice to catch an overnight train and get out of town for a few days.

Any suggestions?

You could read my Article Page on short day / overnight trips:

It is a work in progress & I have not finished it yet ;)

If you have 2 weeks in Beijing you should also look at:

Xi'an (terracotta Warriors)

Zhengzhou (gateway to Keifeng & Song Shan (Shaolin temple)

You can also go further afield as there is a huge range of overnight trains from Beijing. You have 2 weeks in China & there are overnight trains to places like Shanghai, Suzhou & Hangzhou.

The train from Beijing to Hong Kong is a good option. It's cheap (under 500 RMB/person for hard sleepers), gets you there in a day, and is efficient and easy. Very economical and good for families (since you can all have bunks next to eachother).

Another option would be to go to Shanghai on the 10-hour overnight train. You can visit Shanghai, as well as neighboring Hangzhou and Suzhou, as well as other nearby destinations.

If neither of those interest you, you can try Pingyao in Shanxi province. You can stay in the ancient walled city and see performances, sample Shanxi noodles (which are delicious), stay a number of great guesthouses (including Jing's Residence, if you want to go a bit upscale), and relax.

Let us know if you have more questions!
