144 hr visa free transit -- Flight out of PEK clarification

Hello;

Can anyone clarify my understanding of the flight out of Beijing -- Does it have to direct, for example,

PEK -- BKK or can it be,

PEK -- BKK connecting at KUL or

PEK -- BKK connecting at CAN?

Thank you in advance!

Has to be direct to a third country. So connecting at CAN does not work.

Also your flight into PEK has to be direct from outside mainland China, i.e. no other stops in mainland China at all before arrival in PEK. So a KUL>PEK>KUL routing would also not work. It's the immediate stops before and after your PEK transit that matters for TWOV purposes, and they cannot be the same country or region.

@ ThanksSocialSecurity and JohnP1950;

Thank you both so much for your clarifications!

I'll be arriving from Canada via the US. However, it was easy for me assume that staying air side at CAN on the way out would have been OK as I wasn't going into the city. Really glad I asked!

Good to know the I can buy the flight out via KUL which comes out less expensive (Air Asia vs Air China).

From now on, for this purpose, I'll think of it in terms of the planes immediately before and after my intended destination of Beijing, Shanghai etc. cannot touch down in China at all.

That's correct. Think of where the planes you are on are touching. Nothing to do with what your personal intentions are as to getting off planes, leaving airports, etc.

@ kvchinaa;

Sorry for the delay in responding -- Thank you again for your help here and over at the Shanghai forum!

(my flight out of Shanghai, separate trip, won't have a connection, so didn't have to think about whether it would qualify or not)

After search inquiry it has brought me to your message conversation, I think this is somewhat related but apologise in advance if not so.

I am considering a flight route that will have a 13 hour transit layover in PEK before my connecting flight to Chicago, can apply for the the 144 hr visa? Also i transit through Kunming (short 3 hours transit there) first before arriving into PEK.

Any advise or suggestion greatly appreciated

It is already clearly explained above. it has to be country A to Beijing to country B with B and A being different countries and no other stop in China. And only certain nationalities. Pretty simple, what is it that people do not understand about this?

#6 you aren't even on the right thread. With two stops inside China, 144-hour TWOV is not relevant. Only 24-hour TWOV is possible if your total time inside China is not more than this.
