Suggestions please - 7 nights Efate

We've decided to break our Samoa habit this year and try Vanuatu instead. Am currently planning a 7 night trip in August/September and would like your thoughts on:

- Clean, comfortable hotel near Port Vila to use as a base. We're not resort types, but don't want a backpackers either.

- Best rental car company to use

- Best places to snorkel on Efate

- Suggestions for somewhere to spend a few nights away from Vila (on Efate)

- Stuff to see and do. We like to do our own thing and spend our days driving around, stopping as often as possible.

Any suggestions welcomed, thank you!

Update for everybody who has helped : we're now booked in to Tradewinds for a few nights, then a night at the Havannah. We'll then catch the ferry across to Nguna and spend a night, return the following day and make our way back round to PV for another couple of nights at Tradewinds. Will use this time to do day trips to Hideaway Island etc etc. Really looking forward to going, and appreciate all advice given!

Sounds great. You'll get to see so much.

Where are you staying on Nguna?

Will you still hire a car to drive yourself?

Hi Kerry - will definitely hire a car as we like to create our own schedule as we go. Have had a couple of recommendations and will book whoever is cheapest!

We will probably stay at Uduna Cove - looks lovely!

How exciting. The following link gives some interesting info and a map. It is a few years old and certainly doesn't show The Havannah. But you can where Havannah Harbout is. Uduna Cove is also not shown, but they are very near to Vat Vaka Bungalows.

They recommend that you drive anti-clockwise, but seeing as you are stopping at Havannah first, you will probably want to drive clockwise. We drove that way our first time and there's just some quite steep hills that can be slippery when wet. Awesome views at the top though. There is a place to stop and look and take photos on your right. It costs...maybe 200 vatu.

Most? if not all, of the round island roads are bitumen now.

Maybe by now someone has a newer map.

You can also order free maps and guides from Jason's at the website below.....

I hope all goes to plan for you.

Thanks Kerry - the Jason's site is a bit of a goldmine, have ordered a pile of maps which should keep me happy for at least the next decade!

Just a matter of being patient now....will report back when we get home.
