Duty free

We are flying into Bauerfield in September. Is it cheaper to pick up duty free spirits, etc, at the airport duty free shops or from Sydney? Also what can be purchased from the duty free shops in Port Vila?

Hello Coldoll,

You are likely to find that Aussie wines are cheaper at the Sydney airport.

Remember that if you purchase duty free alcohol in Vila, you won't be able to drink it while there. It will go to the airport and you'll pick it up on your way out of the country.

Having said that, the prices of duty free alcohol in Vila are fantastic, especially spirits. Fung Kuey is the first one to check out. They are on the ocean side of the main road at the airport end of the street. (It's a long way from the airport but it is at that approach end of Vila).

Brandy that would cost about $50 in aus is less than half of this price. Sambucca is about $19. All in all it is about half price across the board.

As to other products, take a look at Paris Shopping and the others as well. Some products are fakes with varying degrees of quality.

You can get sunglasses, handbags, some shoes but not many, a few clothes but not a huge range, cosmetics and perfume.

Perfume prices are good.

Hope this helps,

Jen

Just to clarify Jen's comments above. If you purchase duty free at the airport in Port Vila you are able to consume that during your stay. However if you purchase from any of the stores in Vila you have to wait until you depart before consuming.

I'll also add that the selection on arrival at Port Vila isnt huge, so if you MUST have a certain brand to drink while in Vanuatu, then buy it in Sydney before you leave. If you just want a decent vodka/scotch, whatever & dont care what label then get in in Port Vila.

As Jen said, Fung Kuey is great to get duty free to take home...be sure to take your return flight details with you, as they deliver it to the airport for you to pick up on your way home.

I dont know how true this is, but the owner (manager??) once told us that its best to buy your duty free from them on the days when the cruise ships are in, as they drop their prices to be competitive with the ships duty free prices. We always go there about 3.30 on ship days, as all the "cruisers" have left then & we have the store to ourselves. I have never bothered to compare prices with "non ship" days (got better things to do!) so not sure if its really the case.

We then go off to The Anchor Inn next door for a couple of cold beers-perfect!

Thanks to all for your responses. Apart from a penchant for Irish whiskey, I will buy from the duty free in Vanuatu airport when we arrive. I intend to check out the other duty free store you mentioned as well.
