Short answer..No, best not to try bartering for anything other than taxi's.

However, if you make a large/multiple purchase from the market ladies they may offer a discount.

Shops are fixed price same as here but you may be able to get a bulk discount.

Bus' have fixed price / set rates depending on length of trip.

By 'guides' do you mean organised tours? May get a discount for groups if you book in advance.

Major tourist destinations around the globe fall into 2 categories:

1. Those where bartering or negotiating is expected, sometimes even encouraged

2. Those where prices are fixed and the process of bartering is frowned upon.

Vanuatu falls into the 2nd category. Except for services, your request for cheaper prices will be turned down. Taxis, tour guides, others where it is the person's time you are essentially paying for MAY be negotiable.

If someone quotes you a price that you think is excessive, tell them it is 'sass". This means expensive in bislama and then suggest a price you think is fair for both of you.

The people of Vanuatu earn so very little per hour as it is.... please don't barter with them... let them tell you the price.. it is up to you if you accept thier prices..

PLease keep in mind that the people of Vanuatu are the most kind, friendly and generous people that you will ever meet.

We were recently there and I was overwhelmed by the generosity of the people....it brought tears to my eyes to think that these people could have so little but be able to give so much!!

Go there with the idea in mind that you are supporting the local people.

And be fair to the taxi drivers. Sometimes they will offer to take you for the price of a bus so give them the chance.
