Anything of note related to Afro-Colombians & Indeginous.

Hello,

Does anyone have any recommendations on any sights or places to see Afro-Colombian or Indigenous culture in Greater Bogota. I will be visiting February of 2016. I will only be in town a few days.

Thanks,

Bogota isn't traditionally an Afro-Colombian city, it's more native american and European. Before recent migration after Y2k seeing a black person in Bogota was really rare, it still is but they exist. Maybe try live band nights at the Quiebracanto bar in the Candelaria district but take care in the area at night. Use the easy-taxi app to pick you up.

For native american culture, the region around Bogota (Boyaca & Cundinamarca), towns like Sogamoso, Mongui, Raquira have a rich native American heritage but the real natives with unchanged lifestyles are more in the Caribbean region and south-western region of Colombia followed by the Amazon.

Carrera 5 in La Candelaria has been a focal point of "afrodescendientes" in Bogotá, especially university students. I don't think it's what it was 20 years ago (maybe they'be been gentrified out), but see …uniandes.edu.co/secretos-de-un-lugar-aparen…

When February rolls around one usually thinks about the Barranquilla Carnival,not in Bogota but a focal point for Colombian Afro culture.

Bogota's universities draw students from all over Colombia,Afros, indigenous persons amongst others go there to study.

Universidad de La Salle being one of them;our madrino studied law there and went on to become a prominent judge in her hometown.

Check Bogota's local entertainment pages to see what's going on perhaps Chocquibtown will be playing somewhere near you.Visit the many clubs or restaurants for a taste of Colombian culture.

@Playa4U

Great links. Whats the significance of the Gaira restaurant? I see the other one seems to have Afro Colombian dishes on the menu.

Gaira Café named after Gaira,Vives family's hometown near Santa Marta.The owner and brainchild is Guillo Vives (la familia Vives) most notable being Carlos Vives.The decor is a Colombian version of Hard Rock Cafe. Thursday thru Saturday theme revolves around Colombia's afro culture;cumbia,el porro y el mapalé are typical folkloric afro dance and music.The restaurant's dishes are inspired by costeña criolla recipes.
