Kitulgala to Ella

Hi,

We are going to be in Kitulgala next month for a few days and want to visit ella. I believe I can get a bus from Kitulgala to Hatton then a train from Hatton to Ella. Does anyone know if this is correct? Is it easy to turn up for the bus/train or am I best to ask the guesthouse i'm staying in at Kitulgala to book these in advance for us?

Also After Ella we were thinking of heading to either the south coast (Mirissa area), or Arugam Bay. How easy are these to do from Ella?

Many Thanks Becky.

Yes, you can go by bus from Kitulgala to Hatton to take the train. Nearest train station from Kitulgala is Watawala - approx. 20 km from Kitulgala.

You can't reserve seats on buses. Seats are usually available on the trains after Hatton.

From Ella (or Bandarawela) you can take a Matara bound bus to Mirissa, or a bus to Hambantota and change there. To Arugam Bay you will likely have to change a couple of times (Wellawaya, Badulla or Moneragala).

Thanks for your reply.

Do you know if the bus stops at Watawala train station?

How easy is it to organise onward travel from ella to south coast or Arugam Bay? For example are there many/any travel companies that can help organise onward travel?

Thanks again! Becky.

The bus does not stop at Watawala station, but on the main road approx. 800 m from the station. A 10 mins walk or a short tuk tuk ride.

You can easily find a driver in Ella that can take you to south coast or Arugam Bay.

Hi there,

No the bus stops in Watawala town and the bus stand. Often in Lanka train and bus stations are a few 100 m apart.

A taxi from Ella to the south is easy to arrange yes, just ask your guesthouse as a start.

All the best,

Hi Becky,

If you decide that you want to go from Ella to the south coast, there's plenty of buses that need a change in Wellawaya but getting seats on a bus from there can be a lottery.

Every morning there's a bus that starts at Bandarawella and stops to pick up passengers in Ella just after 9:AM. That bus will take you direct to Matara with no bus changes needed.

That bus stops at the junction of Ella main village street with Police Station Road.

If you decide on Arugam Bay,, then there are plenty of buses to Wellawaya. There you need to change and get the next bus to Monaragala. Then change again in Monaragala and get the bus from there to Pottuvil.

From Pottuvil it's 200 to 250 rupees in a tuk tuk into Arugam bay.

Rod.
