Itinerary help

My husband and I are traveling to Vietnam September-October 2018. This is our first trip to Asia. We have been researching and have gotten some much need itinerary help here and, we think are fairly close.

We’d love some feedback on our plan.

We arrive early on 9/28 in HCMC.

9/28-29 explore HCMC, 9/29 evening flight to Danang to stay in Hoi An

9/29, 9/30, 10/1 staying in Hoin An

10/2 car and driver to Hue, seeing sights along the way

10/2-3 stay in Hue

10/4 fly to Hanoi early.

10/4-5 explore Hanoi

10/6-9 some combination of Mai Chau/Ninh Binh

10/9 drive from Ninh Binh to Ha Long for 2 night cruise on indoctrination Dragon Legend

10/11 either stay in Hanoi or fly to HCMC for a day trip to Mekong Delta

We want to be back in HCMC sometime on the 12th for our early flight home on 10/13

Thoughts? We would really appreciate any pros and/or cons. Thank you!

Amy and Jeff

Don't make the all-too-common mistake of trying to see the whole country and cram in as many places as possible.

I spent a week and a half there and I would recommend visiting Saigon, Hoi An, Hue and Hanoi if you want to see the highlights. That limits you to only two domestic flights with a drive between Hue and Hoi An. The Ha Long Bay cruise is amazing as well, I did one night on the cruise and that was perfect if you are trying to cut down. The north is a little more chaotic/old school while the south is more western, so I liked going from North to South, but I think that is personal preference.

I would consider flying straightaway to Da Nang when you arrive in HCMC. Lots of traffic getting to and from airport and bit of a waste of time for a few hours. I would allot the time in HCMC at the end of your trip.

It's possible to fly to Can Tho from Hanoi to see the Mekong for an overnight then drive back up to HCMC. Having said that, your itinerary is already pretty busy. I would surprised if you could fit Mai Chau and Ninh Binh into 3 days.

Hanoi is an amazing city and you can easily spend 4 full days there. We loved Mai Chau, very peaceful valley where we cycled and hiked. We thought the places at Ninh Binh were very crowded but Tam Coc was still worth seeing. I would forget Hoa Lu because of the crowds, or go late in the day

Take out Mai Chau! Fly into Hanoi and make your way down to South (Fly out of HCMC).
