King's Birthday Dec 2012

Hi just realised we will be in Bangkok on the King's birthday, arriving Dec 4th night for four nights.

Can anyone tell us what we can expect i.e will there be shops closed, banks closed etc. Will eating out be a problem? and will we be able to withdraw from ATM's? Thanks,

It will appear to be pretty much business as usual to the untrained eye. ATM's don't sleep.

Major shopping malls will be open but everything else will probably be closed.

The most important consideration, to most, is that

-> BARS ARE CLOSED!!!!!! <-

You can only by booze at hotel lounges. Regular pubs and other liquor outlets can't legally sell it.

Also,since you are coming from Oz, I should also remind you that board shorts, tank tops and flip flops are banned on that day too!

Apart from the ban on silly Aussie clothes (nice one Oct 6.) its worth getting down to Rachadamneon Avenue any evening from 5 December to see the illuminations. There will be firework display in lots of areas on the evening of 5 December, the most spectacular likely to be at Sanam Luang in front of the Grand Palace - but its will be extremely crowded.
