Trip from Fes to Merzouga - how long?

We are planning a 15 day holiday in Morocco in June 2014. We will be in Fes and want to travel to Merzouga and do the overnight camel trek into the desert, then 2 nights between Merzouga and Marrakesh. My questions are - how long is this journey by car? (Fes to Merzouga). I guess it is between 6 and 8 hours. Is it too long to do in one day to then go on the camel trek the same evening? Would it be better to stay overnight along the way and if so where? Should we hire a driver/guide for this part of our trip (Fes to Marrakesh) as the distances are vast and I think we would be able to appreciate the scenery/journey better if we were not doing the driving ourselves.

Do all the overnight camel treks leave from Merzouga or are there other places they leave from? Any advice or ideas are appreciated - thanks!

You can drive self and enjoy the scenery anyway. The road is good so you not need to be worry. It is right, it takes about 7 hours from Fes to Erg Chebbi so you can make overnight stop for example in Midelt, half way to Erg Chebbi.

Don't forget to make stop in Azrou for to visit wild monkeys and ceder forest. Ziz valley after Errachidia is also beautiful.

You would stay 2 nights there in Erg Chebbi because you come later on the afternoon and you can enjoy more of the desert, there there are not only sand dunes to admire. There are so many other interesting things to look at and do, go to the lake, drive a little around so you can feel how it is in the desert etc. But, in June it can be really warm, so be prepared for that in the middle of day it is best to stay inside and relax. But at morning and afternoon it can be nice.

Around Erg Chebbi are many accommodation, so you not need to go just to Merzouga where it is many buildings. You can google now and search after some you would like to stay there. Every accommodation can arrange the trip for you. After leaving Erg Chebbi you can drive from Rissani towards Alnif and Tinerhir for to visit Todra Gore or Dades, or both, before you continue to Ouarzazate. Or you can also continue from Alnif via Nkob to Agdz and see a little of Draa Valley.

Make you itinerary careful, not have hurry because it would be pity to only rush around without to see. Good luck!
