South Pacific

I have a head cold so I'm spending the day on the couch and this is what I put on, to get some kind of a glimpse of Kauai!

"Bali Hai is calling"

This movie is so cheesy but the backdrops are gorgeous!

Well the water, rocks and sunsets are still there. I haven't seen anyone singing "I'm gonna wash that man right out of my hair" though.

I'm sure the coastline is a bit different now, there's been two hurricanes - Iwa in 1982 and Iniki in 1992. Lumahai looks a lot different now even without anyone singing, lol! Also the March 1957 tsunami occurred in the middle of filming, so many of the palm trees and such, are fake in the movie. That's when the bridge over Kalihiwai stream came down - still that way too. Iniki damaged the Hanalei Pier and it had to be re-built. The house overlooking Hanalei Bay (DeBecque's) was the Birkmyre Estate. It became part of the Hanalei Plantation Resort, which became a Club Med, then the property was sold and the house torn down about 1979. And of course Bali Hai is actually Mt Makana.

Yes, I love history......

You can actually walk the area where SP was filmed. There is also a guy named Stan at Hanalei Bay Resort who gives hiking tours of this area. Better hurry! They are about to build homes and a hotel there. :(
