Using a cell phone/iPhone as a camera in Tegus

Hi,

I’m leaving on Thursday for four nights in Tegus (very excited!) and as I read safety warnings I often come across not walking around with your cell phone in hand. I understand not walking around waving it everywhere, but it would be ok to keep it in my front pocket, and then take it out for quick pictures now and then? I don’t own a camera and feel like it would be even more attention-drawing to walk around with a camera anyway.

I know this all sounds like a silly question, but any thoughts?

Thanks!

Not a silly thought at all. I have local friends who have had their phones snatched on the street. On the other hand, as a foreigner, you'll be identified as someone worth robbing whether you have your phone out or not. I rarely use my phone on the street in Tegus or San Pedro Sula.. I do in other parts of the country. I'd play it by ear. Some places it will be fine, others not so much.

And if someone else wants it, give it to them.

Thanks for responding. I figured I would be a target as a 6’1” American walking around, and I definitely won’t fight anyone over it if I’m mugged. I guess I will just have to play it by ear and be careful, but I will want some pictures and will just have to be as quick and discreet about it as possible.

I used my camera - which fit in my pocket - in Tegucigalpa. But I picked busy places and generally thought about the shot before I took it out, so I wasn't standing around holding it in an obvious way.

Thanks wix. I think you had a good technique framing the shot in your mind and then quickly taking the picture when you felt safe to do so. I will employ the same strategy!
