Livingston or Punta Gorda

Hi,

Myself and 4 friends are going to Guatemala and Caye Caulker this summer. After Semuc Champey we have no interest in Tikal so we're thinking of either Livingston or Punta Gorda. We know we can get to Caye Caulker from either of these places so we just need to figure out which one would have more for us to do for two days. We also need to figure out if it is possible to get to either of these from Semuc Chapey. Finding it hard to get the information online. Would be ever so grateful of any information anybody could give.

No interest in Tikal? Is that because you don't like temples/ruins? Tikal is also great because of its rainforest setting and wildlife. I highly recommend a night in the park. I would choose Tikal over Livingston and Punta Gorda any day.

Do you have two full days and extra days for travel?

I liked the boat trip from Rio Dulce to Livingston and I liked our stay at El Hotelito Perdido on the river. But I was not impressed by Livingston itself. That area is not my favorite area in Guatemala.

Punta Gorda is a laid-back town. Not really much to do in the town itself. I liked the market. There are also hiking trails, caves, waterfalls, cultural activities...

It is possible to go from Lanquin to Rio Dulce. Probably easiest by shuttle (just ask your hotel in Lanquin/Semuc) but I have heard you can also do it by bus via El Estor.

To get to Punta Gorda you would then need to take a boat from Puerto Barrios to Punta Gorda. Ours left at 2 pm and it took 1 hour but that might have been the last one so I don't think you can get from Lanquin to Punta Gorda in a day.
