Intinerary for Whale Watching and Surfing? Tamarindo / Drake

We have 9 days in Costa Rica in early August. 2 of those days are flying in and out so really we have 7 full days. We are a family of 6; 2 adults and 4 teens. Our kids have a strong interest in doing some surfing (beginner) and whale watching / snorkeling with dolphins. From what I can tell, Tamarindo would be good for surfing and Drake Bay for whale / dolphins. Looking at the map, these two locations are very far way. Is it possible to squeeze these two locations in one week in a reasonable manner?

Dominical and Tamarindo...even that they are far apart the two places offer very much what you are looking for and less driving involved.

SJO to Donical...Uvita to take the whale watching tour...then back track by road 27 all the way until you see the detour to Puntarenas...take the ferry to Paquera than drive to Santa Cruz then to Tamarindo...

Or you can drive from Dominical all the way until you reach Pan Am Hwy...drive all the way to Limonal...nice short stop to see wild red macaws...FREE no cages....at restaurant La Finca...take the road right across fro Mi Finca...thta is the Amistad bridge road...drive all the way to the other side...make a right...drive by Nicoya keep going until you reach Santa Cruz...take the detour to Tamarindo...
