Driving from SJO to Arenal—recommendations for where to eat

We’re arriving at SJO around 10:30 am on a Saturday which means teenage godson and hubby will be running on fumes. Looking for recommendations on where to grab a bite enroute—hubby’s nervous about leaving the car with all our bags in it to eat, having lost everything once that way in his youth. But I don’t see us making the trip without folks getting hangry unless we do. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

If you're looking for something quirky, You'll probably pass Lands of Love and they serve excellent vegetarian food - a really interesting menu (Mediterranean/ Israeli).

Once you're settled in I normally recommend traditional Costa Rican sodas. I also suggest that you pack food, just in case. We've always brought PB & J sandwiches and trail mix. Pick up some bottled water when you get the car.

Thanks, mimdaisy! Lands in Love looks good. Planning on packing some protein bars/snacks, but forgot about up some water—so double thanks, Hubby seems to think we can get food to go at the airport...

You're going to be anxious to move through customs and get into your vehicle. You really don't pass any of the airport eateries on your way out.

You can contact the rental office (which company?) and see about local food options. If you're lucky enough to have a reservation with Vamos, you can walk to Rosti Pollo for some quality take-out.

Most places you'd stop at before Arenal aren't worth the extra time but Lands of Love is really interesting, culturally and gastronomically. The food is great and the vibe is funky.

Thanks! That was my fear about the airport. But we are renting from Vamos—the quick take out is a great help!

You can go to the Rosti Pollo website and check out their menu. https://www.rostipolloscostarica.com/

My advice would be to send someone over there to wait for the food while the driver(s) completes the paperwork at Vamos. It's a short walk, on the other side of the casino.

You rock—The link to their website so helps! Sounds like a job for the godson—especially as he’s the one who speaks Spanish!

There is a convenient and affordable restaurant at the airport after arrivals called Malinche. Just push through the hawkers and turn right and folloe the sidewalk maybe 50 meters.

The Vamos people will be picking you up after your flight. If you're going to add time at the airport to pick up food they may be waiting for you. Maybe it's just me, but once I get through customs I'm anxious to leave the airport and hit the road. You'll save time if you head straight for the car and order the food while you're completing the paperwork, etc.. You can also stop on the way if you're not starving when you land.
