Is it possible to take a day trip to some Mayan ruins from a hotel near San Pedro?

Yes, it is. The only one I've been to from Ambergris is Lamanai. All day trip, boat to mainland, transfer to a bus or van, then, another boat trip 26 miles up the river. Lots of birds, crocs, sometimes monkeys. It's an awesome trip, but, a long day.

Altun Ha is closer to Belize City, so, a much shorter trip. The tours I've seen advertised combine it with a trip to the jungle resort/spa of Maruba. That doesn't interest me at all, so, I've never researched it. Things may well have changed, might be other options these days.

I think you can also get to Xunantunich, though, I don't know much about that tour.

All the major tour operators offer these tours.

We went to Xunatunich and our resort set the tour up for it. We took a tropic air flight to Belize City, a tour guide picked us up and we were on a 2.5 hour trip to the site. It's right on the border of Belize and Guatemala and so pretty. And we saw some howler monkeys and spider monkeys while walking around! We also did cave tubing which was a lot of fun. The group provided breakfast and lunch which was nice and fed us, but we still brought some snacks. Check with your hotel, I bet they have info on setting up tours. Definitely glad we saw it, it was such a unique experience!

Recommend Lamanai over Altun Ha. It's a great day trip.

Phillip. That was very funny.

Yes you can take a day trip to all of the archaeological sites mentioned above. They are very different experiences and, depending on your mode of transportation, allow you to do other things or spend more time exploring the sites. Don't forget that we have our own small archaeological site (there are numerous sites but this is the only national reserve that's been excavated on the island) called Marco Gonzalez right on Ambergris Caye. It's certainly worth a visit if the weather is good.

Another vote for Lamanai. Altun Ha is cool and everything, and Lamanai is a totally different experience. Just getting there is great.

Did Lamania and had a great experience. It is a long day with lots of bumpy roads on an old school bus but totally worth it. Lunch was provided plus lots of rum punch!
