Family trip - first visit - choosing area to stay

hi all, we are a family of 4 looking to book 6 days in the first week of January. I am totally overwhelmed and excited by the choices to stay and am seeking guidance between staying on the upper west side, midtown or the financial district.

I have no concept of distance and of course we want to be able to catch the subway around, but we are hoping to see snow in central park, be able to walk the streets to find food and shopping, feel safe at night (our kids are 10 and 11), and experience the atmosphere in general.

we are not broadway people, and are coming off 6 days at wdw. We have a two day buffer where we are hoping to catch an NBa game in either Boston, Philadelphia or New York. We are from Australia and have no idea when we will ever get back to the US so want to make this special.

Any guidance or suggestions would be most appreciated!

Thank you

You posted in the general forum for all of NY State; repost in the NY City forum to attract more readers.

For hotel recommendations, include your exact travel dates, airport, number of beds needed, and nightly budget in US dollars, keeping in mind that taxes add almost 15%.

If your budget allows I would suggest staying in a suite hotel on the upper west side - a mid/upscale residential area next to Central Park and near many of the major museums - so you can have a kitchenette in the room for breakfasts, snacks and heat and eat meals from local gourmet shops (Fairway and Zabar's). Has tons of shopping on the main avenue and kid friendly restaurants of almost every ethnicity plus 2 subway lines (5 different trains) for access to the sights in the rest of the city.

Be sure you are prepared with a full on winter wardrobe (not sure where you are coming from other than FL where it will be hot) since it can be bitter in the winter - as well as sleet, ice and snow

For specific recos you really need to give us your exact dates and beds needed.
