This topic comes up every year seemingly, and the general consensus is that there aren't many hotels that are particularly memorable, as St. Louis isn't much of a Christmas destination.
The good thing is, nothing stops you from going to Union Station for the light show, Polar Express, or whatever, and then returning to a hotel that's better located when you're finished (Union Station is kind of on the periphery of downtown). Maybe try the Magnolia for a super nice boutique hotel or the Drury Plaza which has a lot of fans on this forum. Then you'll be closer to CityGarden which is usually decorated nicely, and can still take a quick ride to Union Station if you want.
IMO there are neighborhoods with better lights - St. Louis Hills and certain parts of Webster Groves come to mind. The Botanical Garden and Zoo also have holiday lights. All are just as accessible from anywhere downtown.
Hope that helps.
