Scenic Route - From Niagara to Boston, MA??

Hi there,

We are planning to drive from Niagara to Boston in May 2019 (advance planning!!) and are trying to plan the most scenic route to take... we would like to go to Cooperstown as we're baseball fans, but aside from that we are open to ideas. We could take a couple of days to do this trip, or we could add more days if there are things worthwhile stopping to see, or do. We're a family of four (12 and 11 year olds), from England who appreciate culture, nice scenery, history, etc. As we approach Boston we will visit Concord/Lexington. After Boston, we'll be driving up to Arcadia NP for a few days of hiking etc,.

If you have ideas as to a route we should take between Niagara and Boston, we'd love to hear them!

Many thanks in advance,

90 isn't very scenic but it does pretty much go all the way with a short detour to Cooperstown.

There are other attractions en route if you chose, like Howe Cavern (not far from Cooperstown

We were fascinated by the Welland Canal, which is in Ontario near Niagara

You could take U.S. Route 20 (the longest numbered highway in the U.S. from Cooperstown, through Albany to Pittsfield, MA. In Pittsfield, turn north (left) onto U.S. Route 7 to WIlliamstown. Then turn right onto Route 2 and follow the Mohawk Trail/Route 2 all the way east across Massachusetts. You'll end up in Concord and Lexington, and ultimately Cambridge and Boston. Hop the red line T at Alewife as you enter Cambridge.

Where will you be going after Acadia or before Niagara Falls?

Flying of driving?

The reason I'm asking is that some of the more scenic landscape in New England is up across VT and NH. Upper-state NY is very scenic as well.

It's not on the most logical routes for NF > Cooperstown > Boston > Acadia. Most logical is Rt 90, which BTW passes thru Springfield Mass which is the home of the Basketball HOF should that interest you too.

This is where your end point comes in.

If you were to drive NF > Cooperstown > Acadia > Boston, you could turn NE from Cooperstown. Go thru the mtns and visit battlergrounds at Saratoga and Ticonderoga, maybe visit Au Sable Chasm and then take the ferry across Lake Champlain to Burlington VT. Burlington > Stowe > Lincoln > The Kanc > NConway > Mt Washington > then all the way to Acadia. You could spend a couple weeks on that Cooperstown to Acadia route, or drive it in three or four not completely intoleratble driving days. There's lots of hiking along this route. Maybe a visit of Mt Washington?

Boston, Portland, Manchester NH are the most logical cities to fly out of. Bangor a bit less so, but closest to Acadia but less flights in/out.

If you are spending time in Boston, then that argues for it to be an end point. Most flights in/out, plus and this is a big one, you don't need or want a car rental in Boston. It's a walking city with a good public transit, driving can be tough even for locals, finding parking and paying for it is a pain. Most downtown hotels will charge $50 to park.

Cooperstown is just about exactly halfway between Niagara and Boston, and would make it a two day trip if you include time tos ee Cooperstown. I don't recommend rte 20 in Mass, it is not scenic and is full of strip malls and traffic lights. It's not very scenic in the Schenectady/Albany area either.

Rte. 2 in western Mass is scenic. It all depends how much time you wat to spend in your car. With so many destinations, I would not spend undue time between Cooperstown and Boston.

Many thanks for all the suggestions... sooo.... we will be driving from IL to Niagara... then to Cooperstown / Boston / Concord - we plan to spend a couple of days in Boston - then Acadia for 5/6 days so we can hike and cycle... then (this is where you may think we're crazy), we thought we'd head up to Quebec City for a couple of days, and then find a route back to IL...

We are basketball fans... so Springfield MA might be a fun stop! The route NE from Cooperstown sounds amazing, and maybe there is a way to cover some of that on our way back from Quebec City to IL... I'll have to take a look at the map... I have read that this area is beautiful.

We really appreciate your advice - thank you so much!!!!!

re: " Cooperstown sounds amazing, and maybe there is a way to cover some of that on our way back from Quebec City to IL..."

Question, QC vs. Montreal vs. QC and Montreal?

As you'll see, the route from BH to QC doesn't have any kind of logical path thru the White Mtns and Green Mtns of NH and VT. BH to Montreal could.

FWIW, I drew a route thru the White Mtns and Green from Bar Harbor, well basically Bangor to Burlington. It will hit most of the highlights, IMHO. It's a bit round about. It passes under Mt. Washington on Rt 16, Jackson and N.Conway, across the Kancamagus Highway and then up through Franconia Notch. This route will bring your down over Mt Mansfield and through Stowe and finally to Burlington.

Thank you so much for the suggested route... it has really given us something to think about... we had originally chosen Quebec City as it seems smaller, and more quaint than Montreal... it's really the old town aspect that we found intriguing, and different from the US... we need to bury ourselves in maps again, and rethink our game plan. We can't thank you enough for the suggestions!

You're posting in the Massachusetts forum about other places, you'd do better to post in teh Road Trips forum, or in the particular states' forums.

Also in NY is the scenic Finger Lakes region, with wineries, the Corning Glass Museum, Watkins Glen gorge, etc.

Kevin_from_America - thanks so much for your suggested route to Burlington....

Quick question - we love this suggested route... we thought about leaving Acadia around 3 or 4pm in the afternoon and making some headway towards the White Mountains... that way, we'd have a full day to make our way to Burlington the following day. Are there any scenic little towns not far, or at the entrance to the White Mountains (coming from Bangor direction), that would be worthy of driving to and staying at?
