Monument Valley Tour - looking for opinions

We are headed to Monument Valley in a few days and I'd like to book a tour ahead of time. I've seen quite a few on TA, but am a little confused on which one would work for us. I'd like to do something at sunset and we are both in our 60's. We're in decent shape. Walking a few miles is fine, but not up to hiking. SO is a big John Wayne fan. Any recommendations? Thank you so much for your help.

We are in our 60's as well and visited this spring. Where are you staying? If at the View Hotel you can sign up in person or call the front desk. Are you interested in Sunrise, daytime, Sunset or night time tours? We were there this spring and did not do a tour but drove in the morning a small portion of the Valley Loop Trail carefully in our rental car. We did not drive as far as John Ford's Point. Great views for Sunrise are available from your room balcony at the View Hotel - see image:

and you can see the Milky Way at night but there is lots of ambient light:

You can also see a nice sunburst Sunrise at the Visitors Center:

For hiking there are 3 trails: Wildcat Trail (loops West Mitten Butte), Lee Cly Trail (goes to Mitchell Mesa) and a spur of the Lee Cly - Mesa Rim Trail which gives views of other buttes in the area. All of these 3 trails originate at the View Hotel.

You can read about our visit to Monument Valley and Page AZ in this trip report:

Thanks for posting in the forum.

I would discourage a tour during the sunset hour, especially if you’re staying at the View Hotel. Plan to be on your balcony for that time of day.

Choose a back country tour that gets you back in plenty of time to relax and be stationary for sunset. Even touring the next morning after breakfast makes more sense.
