Best places to visit in January

We are an older couple in early 70s but active. We like non touristy, scenic places. We love to walk but cant do any strenuous hiking. We have never been to Arixona or New Mexico and are wondering where to go. We love to go off the beaten track. Any suggestions? We also want to keep the prices on the inexpensive to moderate. Thanks so much for suggestions!

Not sure of your definition of "touristy." Both Tucson and Phoenix have lots of opportunity to see things and pleasant temperatures. January will be at peak prices for lodging both places, except Tucson will be expensive and little availability Jan 21-Feb 15.

Look at the Top Questions in forums for both cities (on a PC not a mobile device) for info on things to do.

In January it sure makes sense, first of all, the stay in the southern half of AZ and NM. There is no dearth of scenic places , and whereas some of them are 'touristy' of course, many of them won't be overrun in January. On gorgeous place is Superstition State Park with a variety of hiking trails to choose from, many of them short and easy. Another great place, a bit more strenuous as it goes up, is Cochise's Stronghold in the Dragoon Mtns near Benson. Or visit Wickenburg, one of the most authentic western frontier towns, with unlimited miles of trails to hike on - with almost no other hikers around.
