Triglav and Plitvice national parks

Hi! We are a couple traveling to Slovenia in September for around 10 days, flying to Venice and renting a car there. Our main interest is nature, so we planned to stay a few days in Triglav Park, and we're thinking about crossing to Croatia to plitvice. What would be the best route? Any suggestions for other visits or lodging? Thank you so much, we are very excited about this trip!

What kind of trip are you expecting to have? An active one or more relaxed?

For Triglav national park, see these places: Bovec, Mangart, Vršič, Kranjska Gora, Bohinj.

They all have plenty of activities available, including Soča river which is attractive especially in summer, it also flows through Trenta valley with many mountain peaks on its side, available to hike, or many waterfalls which are accessible with a relaxed walk.

Plitvičke are nice to see, but expect a lot of tourists still in September.

Plitvice are nice but in last past years to crowded, really crowded.

In Slovenia one option is Logar valley in September will be already quite + Bohinj and Bovec

First you will have to research if rental car companies in Italy are OK with you driving their car into Croatia. As for Plitvice, it is a very beautiful place but also heavily visited, and since September is still cruise ships season, the number of visitors will be substantial.

Coming from Venice you should drive towards Piran first, for a day of relax. After Piran you have several options like Lipica (horses) Škocjanske Caves, Cerknica Lake, all very natural and pretty in autumn. Usually people are staying in Ljubljana as this is centrally located and offers excellent daily trips options. In the way towards Croatia (and maybe Plitvice but this is a 2-night trip) there is Dolenjska region with many small vineyards. On the way back to Venice stop at Bled first (and don't forget about Bohinj). Drive over Vršič Pass for another stop in Bovec to explore the Soča valley (Trenta). Last stop should be in Goriška Brda (but you will have enough time for this one only if skipping Plitvice).

Thank you for all the help! I will check all this places and try to decide an itinerary. We rather stay out of the cities for most of the trip, but we will visit Ljubljana however! Thanks again!
