Itinerary for a family group with young children

I have family members, two young couples with a baby and a six-year-old, coming from the UK in August.

They want to see Alice Sptings and Uluru as well as visiting us in Melbourne, and possibly going to Cairns.

I'm worried that domestic flights are going to end up costing a lot. Hiring a car in Alice Springs big enough for all six of them sounds like a very expensive option. Any advice on the itinerary, or tips for doing this stuff with such young children, would be appreciated.

If you book ahead, you can fly around Australia fairly cheaply. There are not many airlines, so you can check all of them. The national airlines are:

These are listed from most pleasant to least pleasant. Most of the time (but not always) that is also most expensive to least expensive. Be warned that Tiger is trying hard to be the RyanAir of Australia.

A car is much the best way of getting around Uluru, and might not cost much more than two or three coach trips to viewpoints. They should book in advance.
