Chances of sighting a blue whale?

Hi! We’ll be in Portland on Nov 16 and are wondering if there’s much of a chance we’ll be able to sight a blue whale? Or any whales? Thank you kindly.

Can't say I've ever heard of blue whale spotting in Portland, let alone Victoria.

Have you Googled it?

I stand corrected!

Apparently, according to Google, they can be seen.

But they're not that common.

Which probably correlates with what l initially said.

My understanding is that Blue Whales are deep sea creatures and rarely come close enough to be seen from shore.

Southern Right Whales can be seen regularly along our southern coastline in the winter months - June to August, sometimes into September. Many cows have their calves at Logans Beach in Warrnambool. They head back to the Antarctic in spring. You won't see one in November.

Humpbacks and Orcas can also be seen, but far less reliably.

Unfortunately November is the wrong time of year, but according to this, if you see a flag flying at the visitor centre they are swimming out from the vantage points.

I lived in Portland for 7 years. Only once did a whale and her calf seek shelter and swim up and down along the lee breakwater. Half the town lined the waterfront to watch it was so uncommon. Rarely they would appear off the rock wall along Dutton Way around Allestree but there are few vantage points.

November is when whales are in Antarctica. I have seen Blue Whales there in Nov, Dec and Feb. (along with humpbacks, fins, rights, orca, etc etc).
