Obtaining the best airfare is the best value, especially with travel time.

As others have said, flying is probably your best option. Yes, you can go by rail, but you will need to go via Sydney, and change trains. Bus is probably the cheapest. What time of the year are you looking at? Also, is time a factor? Flying will take about 2 hours, and the bus 24 hours + . The distance between Melbourne and the Gold Coast is near enough to 1,800kms.

From the Gold Coast you would have to go back to Brisbane and from ther to Sydney and then Melbourne. I would fly if I were you. Much quicker and probably cheaper.

Train would take about 24 hours too. Really air travel is your only option. Look at the web sites of Qantas, Jetstar, Virgin Blue, and Tiger.
